West Jordan Care Center Wins Second Hero of the Year Award
This award is awarded to honor those people who have shown commitment, dedication, and compassion in serving persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and their families. Two years ago, West Jordan Care Center’s Kara Larsen won this national award for her dedication to caring for those born with developmental disabilities.
This years recipient:
Laura Horan has been employed with Mission at West Jordan Care Center for 11 years. In October, she will have the privilege of being recognized for a National award through the American Healthcare Association. We are so pleased that she will be recognized as the “Hero of the Year—Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities” for caring for individuals with Intellectual/ developmental disabilities. recipients will be honored at the AHCA/NCAL 69th Annual Convention in San Diego on October 10, 2018.
Laura is always a team player, this also comes in to play when she values input from our resident council. One of the suggestions made was for individuals that have talents in certain areas to be given the opportunity to teach small classes to share their talent. Laura moved forward with the idea and developed club presidencies for our individuals to plan and teach leisure skills such as karate, arts and crafts, book club and sports activities. Laura involves others in showing gratitude for community officials such as firefighters, hospitals and police officers. She invites and encourages community volunteers to come into our home, through coordinating their efforts to be in the best interest of the individuals.
Laura is a member of the Relife foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental needs of individuals with disabilities. Laura is a resource for information at job fairs, educating others on the value of individuals with disabilities. She has also participated in Cancer Awareness efforts held at our State Capitol. Laura seeks out community events and provides opportunities for our individuals to participate in these events such as river rafting trips, state fairs, sporting events and more.
The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) represents more than 13,500 non-profit and proprietary skilled nursing centers, assisted living communities, sub-acute centers and homes for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities. By delivering solutions for quality care, AHCA/NCAL aims to improve the lives of the millions of frail, elderly and individuals with disabilities who receive long term or post-acute care in our member facilities each day.
